Artist Awareness Post - Julie Mehretu

Julie Mehretu was born in 1970 in Ethiopia. She would later go on to study in Senegal. After that, she moved to the states and studied in both Michigan and Rhode Island, and she was able to earn a Master's Degree of Fine Arts. She now works in New York, creating paintings layered with acrylic combined with pencil, pen, and ink. She is inspired by architecture in her work, but her paintings are very energetic. This sense of loose geometry combined with wild energy creates pieces that are very interesting to me.

I really enjoy these paintings because they strike a nice balance between energy and control that I have been trying to achieve for the entire year. They seem very intuitive and expressive, but each and every section of Mehretu's paintings feel very intentional and like they should be there. In the future, I will look at this work as a reference to help myself with creating balance in my own work.
